When Something Finally Clicks: Mickey Rowe’s Fearlessly Different

Posted on March 26, 2022July 24, 2022 by Emily Paige Ballou

“I hope that if non-autistic parents reading take one thing from this book, it’s that supporting an autistic child in their genuine, passionate interests, no matter how seemingly strange or unlikely, is perhaps one of the most important decisions they can make for that child’s future.”

Believing in Nonspeakers and the Right to Communicate: An Interview With Dr. Vikram Jaswal

Posted on March 14, 2022June 29, 2022 by Shannon Des Roches Rosa

Those who would deny people access to their most effective method of communication because of concerns about the potential for false accusations should, as Rua Williams recently wrote, “ask [themselves] why a false accusation is more harmful than the ability to accuse.”

Action Alert: Help Protect Californians With Developmental Disabilities!

Posted on March 5, 2022August 31, 2022 by Shannon Des Roches Rosa

This means that people cannot conserve disabled people as easily as they used to. It does NOT mean that people with disabilities will be barred from getting the supports they need and deserve.

An Ode to Our Nonspeaking Community Members

Posted on March 4, 2022September 19, 2022 by Neurodiversity News

If you don’t want people exposing your private moments online, then don’t do it to [autistic people]. Don’t have a double standard. Treat them in the way that you would want to be treated. Think of it that way.

As We See It: Why Autistic Framing Matters

Posted on January 28, 2022March 29, 2022 by Autistic Science Person

As an autistic person, I decided to watch “As We See It” to see how autistic people are represented. After watching the whole season, I concluded that “As We See It” should be called “As Non-autistic Caregivers See It.”

Photo from the perspective of someone standing at a train station. To the left is a small transit shelter structure with six vertically stacked square translucent windows on the inner portion, and an array of larger translucent windows framed with bright red crosspieces. There is a curved roof overhang visible at the top of the structure. A sidewalk runs directly ahead, patterned with the shadows of trees and architectural features. To the right are tracks, a road with vehicles on it, and a line of green trees, in that order. The sky is dotted with a stylized pattern of detailed leaves, and the image overall is high contrast to emphasize details and edges. Photo © Anne Corwin

Pro tip: it’s fine to want to understand your autistic friends’ sensory and accommodations issues, etc., but please don’t frame it as a “Gotcha.”

Autism Checklist of DOOM

Posted on January 15, 2022October 5, 2022 by Shannon Des Roches Rosa

This checklist is for people who aren’t autistic (or whose autistic traits differ from those of their child/charge) to understand what may upset an autistic person, and cause them distress.

Have Faith In Your Children With Intellectual Disabilities

Posted on December 31, 2021March 30, 2022 by Shannon Des Roches Rosa

This idea that people with intellectual disabilities cannot learn is a very dangerous idea and it leads to us being harmed. I think it is important to autistics with intellectual disabilities that we get the support to learn.
