Learning to advocate for myself, after learning late in life I was autistic, has given me the strength, self-awareness, and tools to stand up for myself after I was suddenly deposited back on the breast cancer treadmill.

People having mental health crises deserve a "rights-respecting and community-based alternative to over-medicalized and police-led responses" that include informed consent. @hrw describes a Toronto-based case study on how such models can work.

Research shows that people with ID thrive if empowered to live their best lives, & that "Intellectual disability severity only had a negative relationship with QoL total level when not considered simultaneously with self-determination." (Paywall, sadly.)
